I read this book cover to cover on its release day, having pre-ordered it because I read about it in Bitch Magazine. I loved the complexities of the characters, the way the past wove its way through every story arc, and how the Mississippi Delta was its own character, full of its own secrets and demands. Wonderful story that is very applicable to today's world. Highly recommend.

Politics aside, timeliness aside, here is a writer who understands that you can tell your readers what is going to happen before it happens, and if the narrative, the characters, are strong enough, it works. Nothing is over the top. Nothing is beyond reality. The reader is able to pick sides, see the options, follow things to a conclusion.

Such a great book but I wish it hadn’t ended so abruptly and ambiguously! Can’t wait to read more from this author though. Her vivid depictions of the South and the underlying themes in this book were excellent.

Billie decides to leave Philadelphia to claim her inheritance….a bit of land and a falling apart shack in Mississippi.When Billie returns she wants to discover exactly how her father died. Billie was there but too young to remember any real details. The unraveling of what may have happened begins a mystery into the past not only of Billie but the culture and times of this Mississippi environment. Billie soon learns that there are those who are not willing to have that chapter reopened.The strength of this book is not the mystery but the exploration of what life was like in small town Mississippi. Although Billie may intellectually grasp what transpired, it isn’t until she is truly involved with people who were present that she fully understands the past.
