EXCELLENT historical fiction read by Lauren Willig, this author has a fan for life in me. If you have followed my reviews, you will know that I do not rehash the story line. You can get that in the book description. But I do tell it like it is; and this, my friends, is as good as it gets. I can’t remember the last time I hugely dreaded the coming end of a read. I slowed my pace down as I approached the last 10% of this book. I simply didn’t want to let go of the story and it’s telling. This multi-generational saga intertwines decades but is surprisingly easy to follow and incredibly interesting and engaging. It touches your heart, wrenches your principles, completely messes with your power of deduction and delivers and ending I will cherish for a very long time. If you like historical fiction, love stories, drama, and a bit of old fashion revenge, you do NOT want to miss this read. Bravo, Miss Willig. BRAVO!
It's been a while since I've read a saga, but that's the word to describe this book. It's a compelling read, although you have to be ready to work at keeping the characters straight. (A host of characters in multiple generations tends to be one hallmark of a saga, though, so that's not a complaint.) The Summer Country is beautifully written, and the plot is intricate.Recommended.
Barbados is not an ordinary setting, but I am so glad Lauren Willig has chosen to write this intriguing story of plantation life in the nineteenth century. Slowly we learn the intertwined history of several generation of families amidst the lush setting of plantations and great wealth created through the labors of the enslaved . The characters are so real, and now I want to go back to Barbados.
I've read other Lauren Willis books (one series being the series like the Scarlet Pimpernel) and like them for their cleaver plots and their humor! This book lacked both. It seems like she thought she'd better wire a politically correct book......I hated the theme and the plot! There was not one drop of humor in it! It's depressing, and the people are horrid to each other. I was very disappointed. I hope the author doesn't stick with these seriously, depressing books!
I'll be honest, at the outset, I wasn't sure I'd like this one, but the dual timeline as it were, managed to hook me about halfway through. I loved the 1812 and 1854 storylines, each for different reasons, I found the 1812 storyline far more intriguing, in terms of overall plot, and I felt the characters in 1812 were slightly more defined and drawn out in terms of characterization. Those in 1854 could have been a bit more so, although I was quite taken with Emily and Dr. Braithwaite. And the 1854 had quite a dark undertone, that put me in mind of "Rebecca", at times. All in all this was a great Summer read, once I got into it, I couldn't put it down, yet I didn't want it to end.
